CONTEMPORARY DANCE
MOROCCO

Role: Producer and Director

2023, Morocco

In 2023, Christina MacGillivray partnered with United Nations Human Rights and award-winning choreographers Saïd El Haddaji (Morocco), Sanga Ouattara (Ivory Coast) and Manon de Matauco (France) to create a contemporary dance workshop focused on migration in Morocco—a key transit country for migrants on their journey to Europe.

The workshop invited dancers from Guinnea, Ivory Coast, Morocco and beyond to express their experiences of immigration through movement. While different cultures and languages were represented, dance served as a universal language able to transcend spoken words. Then together, the dancers crafted an original choreographed dance performance.

The culmination of this creative journey was an original dance performance, held at the Shems’y Circus School in Sale, Morocco. The performance, packed with messages of hope and unity, was covered on national television in Morocco and resonated with audiences as it celebrated people on the move.

As part of the #StandUp4Migrants campaign, Christina also worked to craft a narrative for young people about the right to culture—a fundamental human right protected by the United Nations—drawing inspiration from the stories shared during the workshop. The campaign aims to promote inclusive narratives on migration, challenging racism, discrimination, and xenophobia.
