PATHWAY TO HOPE PUBLIC MURAL

MEXICO

Role: Creator and Director

2022, Mexico

In 2022, Christina MacGillivray partnered Venezuelan artist Camila de la Fuenta (CamdelaFu) and UN Human Rights to create Camino de Esperanza (Path of Hope), a public mural at Casa Refugiados—a sanctuary for migrants and refugees traveling through Mexico City.

The participatory art project began with an arts workshop for migrants and refugees. In the workshop, participants shared their migration stories. A common thread emerged: the power of small acts of kindness—like sharing a cup of coffee or offering a piece of bread—moments that, though seemingly small, meant everything in times of need.

Camila transformed these reflections into a giant mural on the walls of a migrant and refugee shelter in Mexico City. Workshop participants helped bring the large-scale mural to life through painting it together. The mural stands as a symbol to welcome people on their journey and remind the community that small acts of kindness can make a difference in individual lives.

More than just an artwork, Camino de Esperanza became a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and hope. Its impact extended beyond the refuge—the accompanying video was broadcast across Mexico City’s metro stations, reaching 4.5 million people daily with a simple yet profound message: kindness matters.

The Pathway to Hope mural in Mexico City was created in partnership

with refugees, migrants and the United Nations.
