THIS ALIEN NATION
THE UNITED STATES

Partnership Director: Christina MacGillivray

2022-2023, New York City

When Christina MacGillivray first heard Sofija Stefanovic share a story about her Ukrainian heritage on the radio, she knew she wanted to collaborate. Sofija is the creator and host of This Alien Nation, a live storytelling event where authors, musicians, and comedians share their migration experiences. Christina brought This Alien Nation into partnership with United Nations Human Rights, expanding its impact.

LIVE EVENT AT THE PUBLIC THEATER

Together, Christina, Sofija and the team at This Alien Nation co-created two shows in New York City at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, featuring a stellar lineup of artists, including Maysoon Zayid, Nina Kiri (The Handmaid’s Tale), Laura Gómez (Orange Is the New Black), Zuzanna Szadkowski (The Gilded Age), Cleyvis Natera (Neruda on the Park), and Nour Harkati. Each performer shared an original story related to their own journey of migration.

The 2022 event coincided with the International Migration Review Forum of the United Nations Global Compact for Migration, providing a powerful platform to celebrate individual migrant stories.

Christina also interviewed Sofija for the UN Human Rights #StandUpForMigrants Podcast, where they explored storytelling as a tool for finding common ground.
